Anna Lotan Products for Sensitive Skin
This type of skin reacts externally and internally to changes
in life. Can be both oily and dry, it can be easily disturbed by skin-care
products and cosmetics. It tends to go blotchy and have broken veins at the same
time. It might show a flushed or reddened look or might even itch.
For serious cases, you might need to consult a Dermatologist
. In other instances proper care and attention can help you to survive with this
kind of skin type. Use natural skin products that are not harsh on your
skin.
Seborrheic dermatitis is found on the scalp, face, chest and back. A scaly, oily erythematous (reddish) eruption is present, but without papules or pustules. It affects between 3-5% of the adult population, with males being slightly more afficted than females. It can occur at any age. When it occurs in infants, it is known as "cradle cap" in the more severe cases. After infancy, Seborrheic dermatitis usually does not appear until after puberty, but it can then continue for a lifetime.
The name Seborrhea is drawn from the Latin Sebum – the oily secretions from the sebaceous glands and -rrhea – continuous flow, which effectively translate to/as "too much oil".
When the skin is oily during adolescence it can develop, with age, into sensitive combination skin. Sebum coated dead cells adhere to each other, slowing down their natural shedding from the skins surface and locking in moisture as they accumulate on typical areas such as the scalp and facial T-zone. This creates an optimal "shelter" for microbial flora (especially Malassezia or Pityrosporum ovale) often resulting in redness, itchy flaking and general discomfort.
What causes seborrheic dermatitis is still not fully understood, however it is clear that there are genetic factors involved. Additional factors that play a role in its occurrence include environmental (seasonal) transition, personal stress, fatigue and inappropriate skin care, all of which can further aggravate the condition.
Is there a solution?
Seborrheic dermatitis in adults is a chronic (life-long) condition that can be controlled with treatment. It often has extended inactive periods followed by flare-ups. Even though no total cure is known until today, a certain preventive care regimen may be recommended to control this condition.
What to avoid?
- Avoid using occlusive formulations (such as rich night creams, silicone based makeup and water resistant facial sunscreens).
- Avoid over-heating (for example, exposing the face to hot water in the shower and even, it is said, over heated hotel rooms which can exacerbate the condition).
- Avoid surface abrasion with grainy scrubs or peels.
- Avoid over-drying of the skin (using detergent based cleansers or drying clay masks).
How to care?
- Keep the skin clean using a gentle facial cleanser with a very mild degreasing effect.
- Keep the skin smooth and free from dead cells by using an extra gentle de-scaling peel.
- Keep the skin's moisture level well balanced, and use effective soothing gels to hydrate and control skin redness.
- Controlled exposure to UV light has a favorable effect on this skin condition. Sufficient UV protection should be achieved with mild and non oily sunscreens.

Seborrhea and Rosacea
Seborrheic dermatitis is also thought to be the most common skin condition to occur at the same time as Rosacea. Although the two disorders are unrelated, a recent clinical study found that about a quarter of patients with Rosacea also had facial Seborrheic dermatitis and just a little more had Seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. Care should be taken to avoid confusing the two conditions during an initial skin diagnosis.
